Aaron Falk Series by Jane Harper

September 26, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

Recently I was looking for a new book to read. I joined a Facebook group called, What Should I Read Next? and one recommendation was, “anything by Jane Harper”. When someone can say something like that, I tend to become curious about the author. When I did a search for Jane Harper books, The Dry was the first book to come up. Since it was the first book in the Aaron Falk series, and I like series books, I decided to give it a try.

About The Aaron Falk Series

From Amazon – The Dry –

After getting a note demanding his presence, Federal Agent Aaron Falk arrives in his hometown for the first time in decades to attend the funeral of his best friend, Luke. Twenty years ago when Falk was accused of murder, Luke was his alibi. Falk and his father fled under a cloud of suspicion, saved from prosecution only because of Luke’s steadfast claim that the boys had been together at the time of the crime. But now more than one person knows they didn’t tell the truth back then, and Luke is dead.

Amid the worst drought in a century, Falk and the local detective question what really happened to Luke. As Falk reluctantly investigates to see if there’s more to Luke’s death than there seems to be, long-buried mysteries resurface, as do the lies that have haunted them. And Falk will find that small towns have always hidden big secrets.

The Dry is not only the first book in a series, but also a debut novel for Jane Harper. The second book is called, Force of Nature. I currently have that book on hold at my library! Hopefully I don’t have to wait long. I love reading series books back to back!

My Thoughts

First, I will admit, I wasn’t sure about this book in the very beginning. I think it was around the second or third chapter that I realized I was hooked. The tell tale sign that I loved a book is how long it took me to read it. This book took me a total of three days to read. I was pretty sure I figured out “whodunit”. It was one of those things were you keep reading to see how it played out. Yet, towards the end, I realized very quickly that I was so wrong! The actual person “whodunit” literally surprised me. I would never have guessed it. And that, ladies and gentleman, is why you need to read a book. Jane Harper has a unique way of reeling you in and keeping you hooked until the very last word. In fact, I really was hoping for one more chapter! Thankfully there is another book in the Aaron Falk series!

Is Kindle Unlimited Worth It?

In one word…yes! I have been a Kindle Unlimited member for a few years now. There are so many authors (of series books) that I love and ALL of their books are FREE with the membership! 9 times out of 10, I am utilizing my Kindle Unlimited membership for the books I am reading. When I can’t find a book on Kindle Unlimited, I use my library system (Libby). I opt to use a Kindle (or my iPhone with the Kindle app), because I find myself sitting in various parking lots more times than not, either picking my kids up from school or waiting for them to be done with soccer practice. I find it more convenient to throw my Kindle in my purse than a book!

What Should I Read Next?

I am always looking for a book to add to my “Want To Read” list on GoodReads. If you’ve read something recently that you think I have to read, leave the book title in the comments! A few books I read recently that I really enjoyed are:

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

The Best of Friends by Lucinda Berry

Kendra Elliot – The Silence Book Review

September 16, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

Ever since I got my Kindle Unlimited membership with Amazon, there have been a few authors that I have literally read every single book they publish. Kendra Elliot is one of those authors. I have mentioned before that I really like series books. The Columbia River series, by Kendra Elliot is one of those series I enjoy very much. The Silence is the next installment in that series. I read it in less than three days!

About The Silence by Kendra Elliot

From Amazon –

A man is savagely murdered outside Portland, and Detective Mason Callahan finds blood-spatter evidence that tells a troubling story. Files reveal the murder victim, Reuben Braswell, was a radical conspiracist. In his home, investigators find pages of diatribes against law enforcement as well as ties to Mason’s fiancée, FBI special agent Ava McLane. The victim was her informant—and had strong reasons to be paranoid.

To Ava, Braswell’s rants were those of a wearying and harmless man…until they collide with her investigation into the murders of police officers and finding the connection becomes urgent. Meanwhile, Braswell’s brother and Ava’s twin sister both disappear, and disturbing acts of sabotage target Ava’s personal life.

For Mason and Ava, the brutal crimes and escalating mysteries create a perfect storm for a terrorist conspiracy that becomes dangerously personal—one that has yet to claim its last victim.

My Thoughts

First of all, I love the main characters in this series, so I was pretty excited when I saw that there was another book coming out (and a third next year…preorder it). Second of all, like I said, I have read everything Kendra Elliot has written. I like her books that much. They are an easy read with great twists you don’t see coming. I get hooked from the very beginning and I stay that way until the very end! Don’t you love when books get you like that?!?

Other Must Read Books

One of the other things I like the most (besides series books) are book recommendations. That’s the main reason I started this website…that and I love to talk about the books I am reading! I have a GoodReads profile where I track every single book I read. Not only do I try to read more books than the previous year, but I also like to see what books people are recommending. Recently I have read:

Midnight Sun

Ghastly and Good

The Pact

The 20th Victim

The Thinnest Air by Minka Kent

July 2, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

I have written about this author before. Minka Kent is one of my favorites. I have read so many books by her and each one has me on the edge of my seat, literally. The book, The Thinnest Air, was no different. I think I read that book in two days. In fact, I woke up randomly at 4 am, couldn’t fall back to sleep, so I started reading. I read until 6 am. Yes. I was a little tired today!

It’s not like Meredith to simply abandon her loved ones. And no one in this town would have reason to harm her. When her desperate sister, Greer, arrives, she must face a disturbing question: What if no one really knows Meredith at all? For Greer, finding her sister isn’t going to be easy…because where she’s looking is going to get very, very dark.

My Thoughts

If you have seen any of my other book reviews, you will know that I am good at figuring the book out. For some people, that may be annoying, but I love it! I currently read on a Kindle Paperwhitethe thinnest air, but when I was reading actual paperback books, I was the type of person that would skip to the last chapter, read it and then read the book. I know. So terrible! With this book, however, it wasn’t until the last few chapters that I started to figure it out. Nevertheless, this book kept me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend this author. I’ve liked every single book she’s written that I’ve read.

Women’s Murder Club – 20th Victim

June 10, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

James Patterson is one of my favorite authors. I have been reading his books for a very very long time. Alex Cross and the Women’s Murder Club are two of his book series that I love to read. Recently, James Patterson released another book, 20th Victim, part of his Women’s Murder Club series. I was very lucky to get a copy on my Kindle, almost right away, from the library. That literally never happens! Though, I think the library is ordering extra copies of popular books while it’s closed. Whatever the reason, I was very  happy I didn’t have to wait long to read it!

Women's Murder Club

Women’s Murder Club Series

What do you get when you combine a sergeant, a medical examiner, a crime reporter, and an assistant district attorney? You get the fearsome foursome that make up the Women’s Murder Club! The four each work their day jobs, but always find time to get together at their favorite restaurant to officially and unofficially talk about cases. With their unique backgrounds, the foursome have helped each other solve cases and problems that, on their own, would have taken them much longer to solve.

About 20th Victim

From Amazon –

Three victims, three bullets, three cities. The shooters’ aim is as fearsomely precise as their target selection. When Lindsay realizes that the fallen men and women excel in a lucrative, criminal activity, she leads the charge in the manhunt for the killers. As the casualty list expands, fear and fascination with this suspicious shooting gallery galvanizes the country.
The victims were no angels, but are the shooters villains . . . or heroes?

My Thoughts

I liked this book a lot. It felt like the “old James Patterson”. If you are familiar with his books, you may know what I’m talking about. The last Women’s Murder Club book I read, as well as the last Alex Cross book I read, didn’t feel like James Patterson. One of the things I like about this series is that he switches among the various characters so we see a little about what they are doing, thinking, etc. The last book or two, didn’t really seem to have much of that. This book, however, made up for it! He also had a lot for Lindsay’s husband, Joe. Which I liked a lot. I’m hoping that is a foreshadowing into future books and give Joe a bigger part!

The nice thing about the books in this series is that you can read them out of order, if you want to. Some things may not make much sense, but James Patterson does a good job filling in a little of the backstory. So you can catch on quickly. However, I would just read them in order…but I tend to be a rule follower so that could just be me!

Other Books You May Like

Reading is something I make time for every single day. Even if I only read one page, I still read every day. I tend to read a wide variety of genres. If you follow me on Goodreads, you would notice that! While I do tend to gravitate towards psychological thrillers, especially those with serial killers, I also like to read celebrity memoirs. One I read recently by Jessica Simpson, was really interesting to me. Other books I recommend are:

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Stillwater Girls by Minka Kent

The Woods by Harlan Coben

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is actually the prequel to the Hunger Games series! If you read that series, and enjoyed it, you may want to read the prequel that just came out! I enjoyed it! Everything I have read by Minka Kent is excellent. Especially Stillwater Girls! On June 12th, The Woods will be a series on Netflix! I can’t wait to watch it!

The Woods by Harlan Coben

April 14, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

One of my favorite authors is Harlan Coben. He has this way of drawing you into a book and then you are unable to put the book down. Since we are supposed to stay home right now, due to Covid-19, I have been doing a lot of reading. For the last two days, I was reading, The Woods by Harlan Coben. Like past books I have read by this author, I literally couldn’t put it down. I would wake up, workout, shower, and then start reading. Breaks were only taken when I needed to eat or make dinner. The rest of the time, I was reading.

The Woods by Harlan Coben

From Amazon –

Paul Copeland, a New Jersey county prosecutor, is still grieving the loss of his sister twenty years ago—the night she walked into the woods, never to be seen again. But now, a homicide victim is found with evidence linking him to the disappearance. The victim could be the boy who vanished along with Paul’s sister. And, as hope rises that his sister could still be alive, dangerous secrets from his family’s past threaten to tear apart everything Paul has been trying to hold together…

My Thoughts

To be 100% honest, I almost did not read this book. The description didn’t really “grab me”. Not to mention, the book is over 500 pages. However, I had finished my last book I was reading (The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides) and I had spent FOREVER trying to find another book I felt like reading. I have literally loved every Harlan Coben novel I’ve read so I decided to give it a shot. Boy was I glad I did. Like most books I read, I like to try and guess what the ending will be. This book was no different.

So like I said, I like to figure things out before the end of the book. When I read actual books, as opposed to on my Kindle, I was the person that flipped to the last page and read it first. I know. I know. It’s horrible, but I couldn’t help it. With the Kindle, it’s not that easy (and if it is easy, don’t tell me)! I thought I had the general idea. And then something happened to make me question exactly what I thought. The way the book ended was nothing like what I thought in the beginning, and I love that! I love being surprised, and believe it or not, I love being wrong!

Why Kindle?

Several years ago, my husband got me the BEST birthday present ever. The Kindle Paperwhite. Since my kids are involved in sports and I pick them up from school and have to sit in the dreaded car line, I love having my Kindle Paperwhite because it allows me to have my book with me wherever I am! My favorite is during spring soccer (that Covid-19 has totally ruined this year – boo) when I would take my daughter to practice and sit in the pavilion, enjoy the spring air, and read on my Kindle. I never needed to worry about having a book with me since I could store more books than I could ever read in my lifetime, on my Kindle Paperwhite at one time! Amazing! Plus, my new Kindle Paperwhitewoods is waterproof, so if it starts to rain, I won’t ruin my book!
