Psychological Thriller

Crimson Lake Road by Victor Methos

April 18, 2021 by Leah Leave a Comment

I get really excited when I am reading a book and I realize it is part of a series. Especially if I like the book I’m reading. Typically, when I am reading, I get very invested in the characters. That’s why I like series books so much. The Desert Plains series by Victor Methos is no different. I read Crimson Lake Road in two days. If you are like me and like good character development, then you will want to read this book.

About Crimson Lake Road

From Amazon –

Retiring prosecutor Jessica Yardley can’t turn down one last investigation. This time, it’s a set of murders inspired by a series of grisly paintings called The Night Things. She’s the only one who can catch the killer, who’s left a trail of bodies in a rural community outside of Las Vegas.

But the more Jessica finds out, the less clear her case becomes. Out of options, she’s forced to consult her serial killer ex-husband—to gain additional insight into the crimes and the killer’s motivations.

By the time Jessica realizes that pursuing this case is a deadly mistake, it’s too late to turn back. Can she catch the killer, or will she be the final addition to a killer’s masterpiece?

My Thoughts

When I initially read the first book in this series, A Killer’s Wife, I really liked the main character, Jessica Yardley. That didn’t change when I read Crimson Lake Road. In fact, I think I like the character even more. Good news, there is a third book in the series coming out August 17, 2021! I will definitely be adding that one to my Kindle Paperwhite!

If you are thinking about picking up a Kindle, the Paperwhite is one I absolutely love! I got my first one when it first came out about nine years ago, and my husband got me a new one a year or two ago. This is something I use every single day! For those of you with kids, it makes a great gift for kids too. Pair that with a Kindle Unlimited membership, and you have a great gift for them! My kids used to take their Kindle Paperwhites to school with them when they were required to have a chapter book to read every day in middle school. It was much lighter and easier to store in their binder!

Verity, Psychological Thriller by Colleen Hoover

January 18, 2021 by Leah Leave a Comment

“This book is a bit disturbing.” Those were the words I read when I looked up Verity by Colleen Hoover. I had never read anything by this author, so I looked it up on GoodReads. That was the first sentence of the first review I read. And I was all in! I immediately downloaded the book to my Kindle and started reading. The book was finished in exactly 24 hours from when I started it. You know a book is good when you can’t put it down.

About Verity by Colleen Hoover

From Amazon –

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of the night their family was forever altered.

She decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

Due to graphic scenes and mature content, this book is recommended for readers 18+.

My Thoughts

This is the best book I have read in a very long time. Yes it was very disturbing…that review was correct. However, despite how disturbing various parts of the book was, the way it was written was amazing. Colleen Hoover definitely has a way with words. Each and every sentence she wrote, painted a picture in my head, as if I was watching the book unfold, rather than reading it. Verity is definitely a book that I could see made into a movie. I hope it will be one day!

Was Verity Really That Disturbing?

Yes. It really was. There were moments when I was reading it that I needed to close my Kindle and take a breather. While that may spook other people, or even turn them off from the book, it made me love the book all the more! Yes I realize liking to be spooked by the books I read is probably disturbing, in and of itself, but oh well! Let’s put it this way, I liked Verity so much that I immediately downloaded another Colleen Hoover book to read! When I like an author, I tend to read everything they’ve written!

Is The Kindle Paperwhite Worth It?

In one word, yes! My husband got me the Kindle Paperwhite for my birthday one year and it was absolutely the best present I have ever gotten. I use my Kindle every single day. My Kindle is in my purse at all times. You never know when you will be stuck waiting, which gives you time to read! The other thing that is SOOOOOO recommended, is the Kindle Unlimited membership. For just $9.99 a month, you can download however many books you want to read! It’s really come in handy and I have a lot of authors that I love on Kindle Unlimited!

The Best of Friends by Lucinda Berry

September 18, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

One of my absolute FAVORITE authors that I have read since getting my Kindle Unlimited membership, is Lucinda Berry. She has this way of writing that draws the reader in and keeps them there the entire book. Her books are deep; they are intense; they are the best psychological thrillers I have ever read. In fact, the first time I read a book by her (Saving Noah), I knew I was hooked and had to read everything she’s written, and I have! The Best of Friends, Lucinda Berry’s latest book, is fantastic!

My Thoughts

This is by far one of the best books I’ve read by Lucinda Berry. Like every book I’ve read by this author, this book makes you really stop and think. I mean, what would you do in this situation with your friends? The entire time I was reading this book, I was thinking about my own life and what I would do. Lucinda Berry also really does a good job of pointing out that not everything is always what it seems. Kind of like those “perfect” Instagram accounts with the perfect pictures…theres a mess somewhere! If you like a book that you literally can’t wait to read each day or can’t put down when you know you need to go to bed, then The Best of Friends is the book for you!

The only downfall is that you can’t get books from authors like James Patterson, however, in that case, I use my local library app and borrow the books that way!

Mary Torjussen – Gone Without a Trace

June 25, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

Over the last few days, I read a book that ranks up there as one of my favorites. I can’t tell you how many nights I stayed up well after my husband fell asleep, just so I could read a few more pages. Normally I am able to figure out what is about to happen, and I like that. With this book, that wasn’t the case. I had theories, but boy was I wrong. In fact, one of the quotes about the book says, “…with a twist so sharp it will give readers whiplash,” and boy does it ever. I never saw that ending coming! Mary Torjussen, author of Gone Without a Trace, is one author I hope to read more books by!

My Thoughts

I was hooked on this book from the moment I started reading it. The idea of a boyfriend or spouse disappearing without a trace, as if they never even existed, was mind boggling to me. In the beginning, I thought that possibly Hannah was crazy and this boyfriend never really existed. However, I was quickly proven wrong when she spoke with her friends about the situation. I don’t want to give anything away. Like the quote on the top of the cover, the twist in this book is epic. I truly did not see it coming. What happened at the end was not even a blip on my radar. I may have even said “oh my gosh” out loud when I realized the twist. It was that good! Definitely add this book to your reading list.

Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Unlimited

My absolute favorite thing I own is my Kindle Paperwhite. I read on that thing every single day, multiple times a day. I opted to use a Kindle Paperwhite (and also the Kindle app on my iPhone) over reading a book, because it’s so easy to throw in my purse and the charge lasts for weeks! Since I spend so much time sitting in my car waiting on kids, having my Kindle with me to read is great! Along with my Kindle, I also have a Kindle Unlimited membership. For just $9.99 a month, I have access to TONS of books. I can read as many as I want in a month! Click the link above to see the membership plans AND get your first month for free!

Other Books You May Like

I’ve read a lot of books while stuck at home. Shoot, who am I kidding…I read a lot of books, regardless if I have a governor telling me to stay home or not! A few books I’ve read recently, that I totally recommend are:

Women’s Murder Club – 20th Victim

Hunger Games Prequel

Stillwater Girls by Minka Kent

What books should I add to my “must read” list? Have you read any books by Mary Torjussen?

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

April 7, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

I love when people recommend books to me. Back in December, it was recommended that I read The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. I had to place a hold on it through the library and wait until it was my turn to download it onto my Kindle Paperwhite. It took three months to get to my turn, but the wait to read The Silent Patient was more than worth it. Imagine reading a book that has you literally holding your breath as you read it, all while having your mind running every which way to figure it out. That was me. The entire time.

About The Silent Patient

From Amazon –

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him….

My Thoughts on the Alex Michaelides Psychological Thriller

First off, since I read ALL of my books on Kindle, I have to either get books using my Kindle Unlimited membership or through my library. With this particular book, I put a hold on it through the library. Like I mentioned earlier, it took me nearly three months until it was my turn to read it. It took me about the first 50 pages to get into the book. I’m not one to quit a book when I start one, so I pushed on. Boy was I glad I did! The twists and turns this book took were amazing. At one point, I was pretty certain I knew “who done it”. Boy was I wrong! The genius way Alex Michaelides tied of the ending and showed us what really happened, took my breath away. I truly hope this book becomes a movie. In fact, it should be directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Seriously.

Other Books You May Enjoy

I tend to read a lot of psychological thrillers, like this book written by Alex Michaelides. Besides psychological thrillers, I like to read series books, some romance (more sappy, happy ending type), and any other book that is recommended to me. Some books I’ve read recently that I really enjoyed are:

Jack Stratton series

A Killers Wife

The Family Journal

As always, if you have a book that you just read, that you really enjoyed and think I should read it, let me know! I am always looking for new books to read! Especially now that we are stuck inside and reading is all I do right now!
