Psychological Thriller

Stillwater Girls by Minka Kent

February 6, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

I love a good psychological thriller. You know…those books that you read that either scare you while you are reading it, or the books that make you think about it, even when you put it down. If I can have both of those things with a book I read, then I am in heaven! Yes, I realize that may be a little weird, but it’s true! One of the most recent books I read, was definitely a book that I was thinking about after I put it down. I actually read it in about a day and a half. Stillwater Girls by Minka Kent is definitely a book you want to put on your “must read” list!

About Stillwater Girls

From Amazon –

Ignorant of civilization and cautioned against its evils, nineteen-year-old Wren and her two sisters, Sage and Evie, were raised in off-the-grid isolation in a primitive cabin in upstate New York. When the youngest grows gravely ill, their mother leaves with the child to get help from a nearby town. And they never return.

As months pass, hope vanishes. Supplies are low. Livestock are dying. A brutal winter is bearing down. Then comes the stranger. He claims to be looking for the girls’ mother, and he’s not leaving without them.

To escape, Wren and her sister must break the rule they’ve grown up with: never go beyond the forest.

Past the thicket of dread, they come upon a house on the other side of the pines. This is where Wren and Sage must confront something more chilling than the unknowable. They’ll discover what’s been hidden from them, what they’re running from, and the secrets that have left them in the dark their entire lives.

My Thoughts

First of all, I like anything and everything I have read by Minka Kent. She has this ability to draw you in, get you super invested in the characters and then literally blowing your mind with a twist that you didn’t see coming. Stillwater Girls is no different. I was instantly intrigued by this book. About halfway through, I thought maybe I had figured things out. While I did figure out one part, the twist they threw at readers was not something I ever saw coming. I literally said, “oh my gosh” as I covered my mouth. No joke! The huge plot twist Minka Kent threw at the end was not anything you would ever see coming, yet it absolutely tied up the entire book and made it all make sense, despite all the craziness going on.

I know a book is a good book when I finish it and I am left saying, “now what?”. And that is exactly what happened at the end of this book. I guess you could say I like happy endings, but I also like to know what happens next. Most likely there will not be a sequel to this book, but man do I wish there was. I want to know more about these characters life. When that happens, you know, as an author, you did your job!

Where to Buy This Book

Buy it on Amazon, of course! Whether you like hardcoverstillwater girls, paperbackstillwater girls, or on Kindlestillwater girls, it doesn’t matter! You can get any version you want at Amazon, and get it on sale! Pick up a copy of the book today, read it, and then let me know what you thought about it!

Thief River Falls by Brian Freeman

January 30, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

Reading is a huge passion of mine. If I didn’t have something to do the next morning, I could totally stay up all night long to finish a book. In fact, I have done that before. One of the things I enjoy is to all the books a particular author has. When I saw that a Brian Freeman book was  one of the options on the Amazon First Reads list for the month of January, I jumped all over it. I really enjoy other books by Brian Freeman. Thief River Falls most definitely did not disappoint. This book was one that I stayed up until 3 am reading. I could not even fathom going to sleep until I read the end.

About Thief River Falls

Description from Amazon:

Lisa Power is a tortured ghost of her former self. The author of a bestselling thriller called Thief River Falls, named after her rural Minnesota hometown, Lisa is secluded in her remote house as she struggles with the loss of her entire family: a series of tragedies she calls the “Dark Star.”

Then a nameless runaway boy shows up at her door with a terrifying story: he’s just escaped death after witnessing a brutal murder—a crime the police want to cover up. Obsessed with the boy’s safety, Lisa resolves to expose this crime, but powerful men in Thief River Falls are desperate to get the boy back, and now they want her too.

Lisa and her young visitor have nowhere to go as the trap closes around them. Still under the strange, unforgiving threat of the Dark Star, Lisa must find a way to save them both, or they’ll become the victims of another shocking tragedy she can’t foresee.

Doesn’t that sound intriguing? From that description, I was hooked. I wanted to know more.

My Thoughts

I literally could not put the book down. In fact, we went to see Star Wars…actually my husband and kids went to see Star Wars, I went to eat popcorn (not a Star Wars fan…don’t hate me). I took a blanket with me and put it over my head and read Thief River Falls on my phone. People probably thought I was crazy, but I didn’t care! I was that into the book. In fact, I ended up staying up until close to 3 am that night just so I could finish the book. The best part was when I audibly gasped towards the end. I thought I had figured the book out, but not fully. The ending was excellent!

Why Kindle Paperwhite?

Um…why not?!? The best gift I ever got was my Kindle Paperwhite. My husband got it for me a few years ago and I have been reading on it ever since. I spend a lot of time sitting at kids sports, so the Kindle Paperwhite is something I can slip into my purse and since it is backlit, I can read in my car in the dark while I wait for them to end practice. Adding the Kindle app to my iPhone allows me to continue reading on my book when I’ve forgotten my Kindle at home.

Other Books You Must Read

If Thief River Falls by Brian Freeman sounds interesting to you, other books you may want to add to your list are:

The Voice Inside (Frost Easton Series) by Brian Freeman

Alex Cross Series by James Patterson

Serial Killer Book Series by Brenda Novak

Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry

I am always looking for books to add to my “must read” list. Please let me know if there is a book you read that you think I would enjoy!

The Girl Who Lived by Christopher Greyson

April 16, 2019 by Leah Leave a Comment

When I find an author I like, I read everything that author writes. I can’t help myself. The first two authors I remember obsessing about like this are James Patterson and Dean Koontz. I was constantly checking their books out of the library. Now, my obsession is with Christopher Greyson. All of his books grab me from the very beginning and keep me interested the entire way through the book. When I read he had a book out called, The Girl Who Lived, I immediately added it to my Kindle. I didn’t even read the description. The title said all I needed to hear.

Fast forward a few years, the anniversary of the murders is approaching and after being released from the psychiatric hospital you were put in, you spiral out of control, getting drunk as much as possible. And then it hits you…the police don’t believe what you are telling them; your therapist thinks you are a suicidal mess; so you do the one and only thing. You hunt for the killer on your own.

Anyone that knows me and my reading likes/dislikes, knows that I always MUST read the back of the book. I even go as far as to read a few reviews on Amazon before adding it to my Kindle Paperwhitethe girl who lived. Which, speaking of the Kindle Paperwhite, it’s the best best e-reader! If you love your Kindle as much as I do, definitely give Kindle Unlimited a try. Not only is The Girl Who Lived book FREE with Kindle Unlimited, but so are other Christopher Greyson books! Other Christopher Greyson Books You MUST Read

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it twice, I love series books. I get so invested with the characters and the style of writing. When I first got introduced to Christopher Greyson, it was with his Jack Stratton series. They are quick reads and the characters are very likable.

As always, please leave me a comment letting me know if you read these books and what you think of them! I’d love to hear your thoughts. Also, if there is a book you think I must leave, drop the title in the comment! Feel free to follow me on GoodReads to see what I’m reading.

Why Psychological Thrillers?

Why not? With this particular series, Dr. Evelyn Talbot experienced an absolutely horrific experience at the hands of her high school boyfriend. Rather than shut down and withdraw from the world, Evelyn Talbot fought back. She opened a prison in Alaska that houses the worst kind of criminal. The psychopaths. Her main objective with this prison is to study these men and draw conclusions about why they do what they do. She does this, all while, never giving up hope that the psychopath that tormented her so many years ago, will be caught.

Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry

October 21, 2017 by Leah 13 Comments

When I had my baby shower for my first child, everyone wrote a tip on an index card for me to read later. Most people wrote things like, “sleep when the baby is sleeping”. However, a few people wrote, “love your child unconditionally”. Seems easy enough, right? But what if your child does something so horrific and vile that you can barely look at them? Will you still be able to love your child unconditionally? Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry is a thought provoking novel that will have you questioning yourself from start to finish.

About Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry from Amazon

Meet Noah—an A-honor roll student, award-winning swimmer, and small-town star destined for greatness. There weren’t any signs that something was wrong until the day he confesses to molesting little girls during swim team practice. He’s sentenced to eighteen months in a juvenile sexual rehabilitation center.

His mother, Adrianne, refuses to turn her back on him despite his horrific crimes, but her husband won’t allow Noah back into their home. In a series of shocking and shattering revelations, Adrianne is forced to make the hardest decision of her life. Just how far will she go to protect her son?

Saving Noah challenges everything you think you know about teenage sexual offenders. It will keep you up at night long after you’ve read the last page, questioning beliefs you once thought were true.

Saving NoahSaving Noah

Lucinda Berry did an EXCELLENT job grabbing my attention with this book. Her style of writing is such that you feel like you are part of a conversation. For me, personally, I prefer books like that. Those are the books that I have a hard time putting down. Any time I put the book down, I couldn’t stop thinking about the book. Would I be able to love my child if they did something like this? How would I handle this situation? I finished Saving Noah yesterday and this book has been on my mind ever since. The last book to cause me to really think like this was The Shack.
