Carolyn Brown – The Family Journal

March 2, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

Imagine being a single mother and finding your child smoking pot in a public restroom. That would be pretty shocking, right? Well, let’s take things a step further, and imagine also finding out that your other child is sneaking out and drinking with friends. You need to take drastic steps to turn your children around, right? Right! In the great book, The Family Journal by Carolyn Brown, that is exactly what main character, Lily Anderson was facing.

The Family Journal by Carolyn Brown

I’ve read one or two other books by Carolyn Brown and I absolutely loved them. When I saw The Family Journal, I knew I had to read it! This book was like the others I had read by the same author, in the sense that I could not put the book down.

Book Description from Amazon

At the end of her rope, single mom Lily Anderson is determined to move her rebellious children in the right direction. That means taking away their cell phones, tablets, and computers—at least temporarily—and moving to the house where Lily grew up in the rural town of Comfort, Texas. But Lily has a bigger challenge than two sulking kids.

The house comes with Mack Cooper, high school teacher and handsome longtime renter. The arrangement: just housemates. But Mack’s devoted attention to the kids starts to warm Lily’s resistant heart. Then Lily finds an old leather-bound book in which five generations of her female ancestors shared their struggles and dreams. To Lily, it’s a bracing reminder about the importance of family…and love.

Now it’s time for Lily to add an adventurous new chapter to the cherished family journal—by embracing a fresh start and taking a chance on a man who could make her house a home.

My Thoughts

I already told you that I could not put the book down! That seems to be the theme lately with the books I’ve read. But, then again, when I like an author, I tend to read everything they write. Like James Patterson. He’s one of my favorite authors, so I read everything he writes. The same holds true with Carolyn Brown. I have read a few of her books and I plan on reading more!

In The Family Journal, Lily Anderson finds a journal in her moms things. This journal was written in by the women in her family. Not only does Lily learn about the strong women in her family that came before her, but she shares that journal with her daughter, which helped repair their relationship. As much as Lily Anderson and her daughter loved reading the various passages in the journal, I also enjoyed reading them. It made me stop and think about what the women in my family would write about if they had a journal like that to pass down.

Mystery Romance – Before We Were Strangers

February 23, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

I don’t know about you, but I when I like an author, I have to read everything that author puts out. For instance, I really like Bella Forrest. So much so, I have read almost every book she has published in her  A Shade of a Vampire Series. We’re talking like 80+ books in that series so far. Brenda Novak is another author I enjoy reading. When I saw she had a new book out, Before we were Strangers, I knew I had to read it. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. It had me turning the pages and reading late into the night like her other books have done. This mystery romance had me hooked!

About This Mystery Romance Novel

I typically read psychological thrillers. You know, the books that scare you while you are reading them. However, I also like romance books, as well. Not so much the books filled with sex scenes, though I did read Fifty Shades of Greymystery romance, but the stories that has two main characters finding love. You know, in a Hallmark Movie kind of way! Sometimes you just need a little happy ending, with a side of love, thrown into a good mystery!

About the book, From Amazon

Something happened to her mother that night. Something no one wants to talk about. But she’s determined to uncover her family’s dark secrets, even if they bury her.

Five-year-old Sloane McBride couldn’t sleep that night. Her parents were arguing again, their harsh words heating the cool autumn air. And then there was that other sound—the ominous thump before all went quiet.

In the morning, her mother was gone.

The official story was that she left. Her loving, devoted mother! That hadn’t sat any better at the time than it did when Sloane moved out at eighteen, anxious to leave her small Texas hometown in search of anywhere else. But not even a fresh start working as a model in New York could keep the nightmares at bay. Or her fears that the domineering father she grew up with wasn’t just difficult—he was deadly.

Now another traumatic loss forces Sloane to realize she owes it to her mother to find out the truth, even if it means returning to a small town full of secrets and lies, a jilted ex-boyfriend, and a father and brother who’d rather see her silenced. But as Sloane starts digging into the past, the question isn’t whether she can uncover what really happened that night…it’s what will remain of her family if she does?

My Thoughts

Like every other book I have read by Brenda Novak, I loved it! It’s very hard to review this book, without giving things away. So I will suffice it to say that things are at all the way they seem. Just when you think you have it figured out, a twist is thrown at you. However, with that said, Brenda Novak does an excellent job of tying up loose ends and giving the reader exactly what they want. It took me about three days to read this book. We traveled to Florida last week for a soccer tournament. I read the entire time we were on the plane, as well as at the gate in between flights. I also read a few nights when I couldn’t fall asleep. When I say I couldn’t put this book down, I really could not put it down.

Do You have a Kindle?

One of my absolute favorite things I own is my Kindle Paperwhitemystery romance. It’s lightweight and can fit in my purse. Which made it super easy for me to take on the airplane. I simply stored a few books on it and I was good to go. The battery lasts for weeks! It’s truly amazing. With my Kindle Paperwhite, I also have a subscription to Kindle Unlimited. Since I spend so much of my time sitting and waiting for kids to be done with school or sports, I read a lot. With Kindle Unlimited, I have access to thousands of books that I can read for free! Check out the Kindle Unlimited Membership Plansmystery romance and see if that is something you would like to try out. Your first month is absolutely free! Columbia River Series Book 1

February 9, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

Series books are my absolute favorite books to read. Not only do you get to know the characters, but it’s all about the author too. I, like most people, I would assume, like to read pretty much everything an author I like writes. One of those authors I enjoy reading is Kendra Elliot. She is the author of many different series books I read. Most recently, I The Last Sister, which is part of the Columbia River series by Kendra Elliot. Like many books I’ve read by this author, it was a book I was not able to put down.

About Book 1 in the Columbia River Series

From Amazon:

Twenty years ago Emily Mills’s father was murdered, and she found his body hanging in the backyard. Her younger sister, Madison, claims she was asleep in her room. Her older sister, Tara, claims she was out with friends. The tragedy drove their mother to suicide and Tara to leave town forever. The killer was caught. The case closed.

Ever since, Emily and Madison have tried to forget what happened that night—until an eerily similar murder brings it all back. It also brings FBI special agent Zander Wells to the Oregon logging town. As eager as he is to solve the brutal double slaying, he is just as intrigued with the mystery of Emily’s and her sisters’ past.

When more blood is shed, Zander suspects there’s a secret buried in this town no one wants unearthed. Is it something Emily and Madison don’t know? Or aren’t telling? And Tara? Maybe Emily can’t bear to find her. Because when Tara disappeared, she took a secret of her own with her.

My Thoughts

As I was reading book one of the Columbia River series, I started to recognize one of the characters, or at least I thought I did. And I was right! One of the main characters in the Columbia River series, Ava McLane, is also the main character in Kendra Elliot’s, Callahan & McLanecolumbia river series series (which you should read). I love when new a new series spins off another one!

Like most books I read, part way through, I thought I knew how things were going to turn out. Boy was I wrong with this book! Sometimes that annoys me. I don’t know if it’s because I’m irritated I got it wrong or if it is because sometimes I think a different ending would have been better. In this case, it was because I got it wrong. I mean, I literally had it figured out, or so I thought. I’m really looking forward to book two when it comes out in October!

Other Books You May Want to Read

If you like series books as much as I do, then you will want to check out these other books I’ve read:

Merry Hanukkah Series: Happy Everything

Have you read any of those books above? A lot of them I got with my Kindle Unlimited membership. There are TONS of books to choose from and you can borrow them for FREE if you have the membership! Personally, I like the Kindle Paperwhite.

Stillwater Girls by Minka Kent

February 6, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

I love a good psychological thriller. You know…those books that you read that either scare you while you are reading it, or the books that make you think about it, even when you put it down. If I can have both of those things with a book I read, then I am in heaven! Yes, I realize that may be a little weird, but it’s true! One of the most recent books I read, was definitely a book that I was thinking about after I put it down. I actually read it in about a day and a half. Stillwater Girls by Minka Kent is definitely a book you want to put on your “must read” list!

About Stillwater Girls

From Amazon –

Ignorant of civilization and cautioned against its evils, nineteen-year-old Wren and her two sisters, Sage and Evie, were raised in off-the-grid isolation in a primitive cabin in upstate New York. When the youngest grows gravely ill, their mother leaves with the child to get help from a nearby town. And they never return.

As months pass, hope vanishes. Supplies are low. Livestock are dying. A brutal winter is bearing down. Then comes the stranger. He claims to be looking for the girls’ mother, and he’s not leaving without them.

To escape, Wren and her sister must break the rule they’ve grown up with: never go beyond the forest.

Past the thicket of dread, they come upon a house on the other side of the pines. This is where Wren and Sage must confront something more chilling than the unknowable. They’ll discover what’s been hidden from them, what they’re running from, and the secrets that have left them in the dark their entire lives.

My Thoughts

First of all, I like anything and everything I have read by Minka Kent. She has this ability to draw you in, get you super invested in the characters and then literally blowing your mind with a twist that you didn’t see coming. Stillwater Girls is no different. I was instantly intrigued by this book. About halfway through, I thought maybe I had figured things out. While I did figure out one part, the twist they threw at readers was not something I ever saw coming. I literally said, “oh my gosh” as I covered my mouth. No joke! The huge plot twist Minka Kent threw at the end was not anything you would ever see coming, yet it absolutely tied up the entire book and made it all make sense, despite all the craziness going on.

I know a book is a good book when I finish it and I am left saying, “now what?”. And that is exactly what happened at the end of this book. I guess you could say I like happy endings, but I also like to know what happens next. Most likely there will not be a sequel to this book, but man do I wish there was. I want to know more about these characters life. When that happens, you know, as an author, you did your job!

Where to Buy This Book

Buy it on Amazon, of course! Whether you like hardcoverstillwater girls, paperbackstillwater girls, or on Kindlestillwater girls, it doesn’t matter! You can get any version you want at Amazon, and get it on sale! Pick up a copy of the book today, read it, and then let me know what you thought about it!

Thief River Falls by Brian Freeman

January 30, 2020 by Leah Leave a Comment

Reading is a huge passion of mine. If I didn’t have something to do the next morning, I could totally stay up all night long to finish a book. In fact, I have done that before. One of the things I enjoy is to all the books a particular author has. When I saw that a Brian Freeman book was  one of the options on the Amazon First Reads list for the month of January, I jumped all over it. I really enjoy other books by Brian Freeman. Thief River Falls most definitely did not disappoint. This book was one that I stayed up until 3 am reading. I could not even fathom going to sleep until I read the end.

About Thief River Falls

Description from Amazon:

Lisa Power is a tortured ghost of her former self. The author of a bestselling thriller called Thief River Falls, named after her rural Minnesota hometown, Lisa is secluded in her remote house as she struggles with the loss of her entire family: a series of tragedies she calls the “Dark Star.”

Then a nameless runaway boy shows up at her door with a terrifying story: he’s just escaped death after witnessing a brutal murder—a crime the police want to cover up. Obsessed with the boy’s safety, Lisa resolves to expose this crime, but powerful men in Thief River Falls are desperate to get the boy back, and now they want her too.

Lisa and her young visitor have nowhere to go as the trap closes around them. Still under the strange, unforgiving threat of the Dark Star, Lisa must find a way to save them both, or they’ll become the victims of another shocking tragedy she can’t foresee.

Doesn’t that sound intriguing? From that description, I was hooked. I wanted to know more.

My Thoughts

I literally could not put the book down. In fact, we went to see Star Wars…actually my husband and kids went to see Star Wars, I went to eat popcorn (not a Star Wars fan…don’t hate me). I took a blanket with me and put it over my head and read Thief River Falls on my phone. People probably thought I was crazy, but I didn’t care! I was that into the book. In fact, I ended up staying up until close to 3 am that night just so I could finish the book. The best part was when I audibly gasped towards the end. I thought I had figured the book out, but not fully. The ending was excellent!

Why Kindle Paperwhite?

Um…why not?!? The best gift I ever got was my Kindle Paperwhite. My husband got it for me a few years ago and I have been reading on it ever since. I spend a lot of time sitting at kids sports, so the Kindle Paperwhite is something I can slip into my purse and since it is backlit, I can read in my car in the dark while I wait for them to end practice. Adding the Kindle app to my iPhone allows me to continue reading on my book when I’ve forgotten my Kindle at home.

Other Books You Must Read

If Thief River Falls by Brian Freeman sounds interesting to you, other books you may want to add to your list are:

The Voice Inside (Frost Easton Series) by Brian Freeman

Alex Cross Series by James Patterson

Serial Killer Book Series by Brenda Novak

Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry

I am always looking for books to add to my “must read” list. Please let me know if there is a book you read that you think I would enjoy!
