Romance Novel – November 9 by Colleen Hoover

November 18, 2021 by Leah Leave a Comment

When I choose my books, I tend to gravitate towards stories with mysteries, serial killers, etc. Typically, if the book scares me, then I will like it. And the funny thing is, my husband used to travel a lot for work. I would read these books while he was gone and yes, I would scare myself! Despite liking more challenging subjects, I also like a good, old fashion romance novel. I refer to them as my brain cleanser after reading something scary! Now, as you know, I am a Colleen Hoover fan. So, when it was recommended I check out another book by this author, I immediately placed a hold on it in my Libby app. November 9 by Colleen Hoover did not disappoint.

About the Romance Novel, November 9

From Amazon –

Fallon meets Ben, an aspiring novelist, the day before her scheduled cross-country move. Their untimely attraction leads them to spend Fallon’s last day in Los Angeles together, and her eventful life becomes the creative inspiration Ben has always sought for his novel. Over time and amidst the various relationships and tribulations of their own separate lives, they continue to meet on the same date every year. Until one day Fallon becomes unsure if Ben has been telling her the truth or fabricating a perfect reality for the sake of the ultimate plot twist.

Can Ben’s relationship with Fallon—and simultaneously his novel—be considered a love story if it ends in heartbreak?

Not a very long synopsis, but sometimes I prefer that. It has just enough to pull me in to read the book, but doesn’t give much away.

My Thoughts on the Book by Colleen Hoover

When this book was first recommended to me, I was kind of not feeling it. I read the short synopsis and it made me think of that Anne Hathaway movie, One Day. That movie wasn’t my favorite. It wasn’t a bad movie, but not one I cared to watch again. However, November 9 was a Colleen Hoover novel. We all know how much I enjoy her books. It’s also a romance novel and I was needing a brain cleansing right about then, so I gave it a try. I’m glad I did. I found the characters to be likable and believable. Nothing annoys me more than not believing and buying into the characters. I know some people say the plot is everything in a book, and they aren’t wrong, but if you can’t buy into the characters, does the plot even matter at that point? While reading, I was waiting for that big OMG moment. There had to be one and boy was there. I think I may have gasped out loud on the airplane. Actually, I know I did! All in all, I really enjoyed this book.

Sarah Penner – The Lost Apothecary

November 17, 2021 by Leah Leave a Comment

I love when people recommend books to me. Sometimes I like them and sometimes I don’t. Several people told me that I needed to read the book, The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner. I read the synopsis and put the book on hold in the Libby app. It is classified under magical realism and historical mystery. I wasn’t sure I was going to like it, but since so many people said I should read it, I decided to give it a try. My elementary school librarian used to tell us not to judge a book by it’s cover. In this case, I was not about to judge a book by how it was classified. Like in elementary school, there was a good chance a book could surprise me!

Kindles Make the Best Gift!

My Kindle Paperwhite was the best gift I ever got. It is so much easier to slip my Kindle in my purse and take it with me. Since I spend most of my time waiting in car lines or in the parking lot at practice, having something portable is good! Kindles are also good for kids! All they can do on a Kindle is read. So there is no worry about whether or not they are playing games instead of reading. We got our kids a Kindle when they went into 6th grade because they had to have a book with them at all times. At their middle school, backpacks were not allowed, so having a light Kindle in their binder made it easier for them. They also never had to worry about losing points if they finish their book and don’t have something to read.

About The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

From Amazon –

Hidden in the depths of eighteenth-century London, a secret apothecary shop caters to an unusual kind of clientele. Women across the city whisper of a mysterious figure named Nella who sells well-disguised poisons to use against the oppressive men in their lives. But the apothecary’s fate is jeopardized when her newest patron, a precocious twelve-year-old, makes a fatal mistake, sparking a string of consequences that echo through the centuries.

Meanwhile in present-day London, aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, running from her own demons. When she stumbles upon a clue to the unsolved apothecary murders that haunted London two hundred years ago, her life collides with the apothecary’s in a stunning twist of fate—and not everyone will survive.

With crackling suspense, unforgettable characters and searing insight, The Lost Apothecary is a subversive and intoxicating debut novel of secrets, vengeance and the remarkable ways women can save each other despite the barrier of time.

My Thoughts on Sarah Penner’s Book

I really enjoyed this book! It was written in one of my favorite styles where it alternates points of view of the characters. Some chapters also go back in time. That may seem confusing, but it really isn’t. I felt like I got more information and insight into the characters and the actual plot. My hope is that Sarah Penner will write a sequel to The Lost Apothecary. When I was looking this book, I found an article that this will be made into a series! How exciting is that?! It also stated that the author will be a consultant to the series. So I hope that means it will stay very close to the original story.

Other Books You Should Read

I have read a lot of books lately. Below are my favorites that you should give a chance!

  • It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover
  • Verity, Psychological Thriller by Colleen Hoover
  • The Best of Friends by Lucinda Berry
  • Stillwater Girls by Minka Kent

If you’ve read any of those, let me know what you thought! Also, if you have any suggestions for me, leave them in a comment!

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

November 16, 2021 by Leah Leave a Comment

My very introduction to Colleen Hoover and her books was to Verity. That book had me from literally the first chapter. I couldn’t put the book down and from that moment, I was hooked on everything by this author! Recently I was on a plane and needed something to read. Right before they closed the doors to the plane, I got a notification that a book I had on hold was finally ready to download. I quickly downloaded It Ends with Us and spent the next three and a half hours reading.

About It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover

From Amazon –

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. And when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life seems too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.

As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

My Thoughts on This Colleen Hoover Book

From the moment I sat down on each plane, I started reading and didn’t stop. So it’s safe to say that I liked it a lot! When I initially read some of the reviews, I thought that this was not a book I was going to like. One of the reviewers said, “this book made me stop and think…a lot”. Those reviews usually make me roll my eyes. Don’t get me wrong, I like books that make me think. However, this book didn’t really sound like it would be one of those “thinker” books. Boy was I wrong. Like many books I read, I sometimes start feeling like I know what was going to happen. Usually I like that. This time around, it annoyed me. I thought I knew what was going to happen and I wasn’t impressed. Where was this deep thinking aspect of the book? And then it happened…NOTHING like I thought it was going to and then I saw why this made other reviewer think!

Possible Spoilers

Now please be aware that this next part may contain possible spoilers. I try not to spoil books because my point with this post and every other post on this site is to encourage readers to read the books I have read and enjoyed. You will notice that you never see negative book reviews on here. I do that on purpose. It takes a lot of time for authors to write there books and sometimes the book is for me and sometimes it’s not. So I have chosen to share only the books I have read and liked! With this latest Colleen Hoover book, the two things I wish that was done differently was that Atlas was given a much bigger role throughout the book. I also wish that the scene with Atlas and Lily’s father would have gone slightly different…as in, I wish there were repercussions for Lily’s father.

What Should I Read Next?

In exactly 13 days, I will be having a pretty involved knee surgery that will have me laid up for quite awhile. So please leave me the names of some books that I should read. I am making a list. While I am laid up and watching Netflix and reading, my daughter will be making these delicious copycat Lofthouse cookies! You should try them!

Halloween Books for Kids

October 11, 2021 by Leah Leave a Comment

One of the things I really loved when my kids were little (and still love) were picture books. I never had a problem saying yes when my kids wanted a new book. Even now, as 14 and 17 year olds, they enjoy reading. Though, sometimes they may say they don’t (hello, teenagers). I was always partial to the holiday books. Not only are they fun to read, but they also allow for traditions to form by bringing them out the month of that particular holiday. Everyone is very familiar with the various Christmas books out there, but another great holiday for picture books is Halloween. These Halloween books are perfect for you to pick up for your kids this year!

Halloween Books You Need!

About 18 years ago, I did a long term term substitute teaching position as a media specialist. I absolutely loved it! One of the things I noticed about the kids in the younger grades was that they really enjoyed books that had the same character. Books like Dont Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus. It’s been 18 years, but I still remember reading that book to the kids and they about lost their minds! Every week they asked if we could read another book with that character! If your kids are like the kids I remember teaching, then you will want to pick up the following books:

  • It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse
  • The Berenstain Bears Happy Halloween
  • Moldilocks and the Three Scares: A Zombie Tale
  • Goodnight Goon: A Petrifying Parody

Funny Halloween Themed Books

The best way to get kids interested in reading and listening to stories, is to read them funny books that make them laugh. If they are laughing, they want more. The following books are Halloween books that are guaranteed to get your kids laughing. Not only are they fun to read out loud to our kids, but the kids love them. It’s a win win!

  • Click, Clack, Boo!
  • The Hallo-Wiener
  • Splat the Cat What Was That
  • Halloween Bugs: A Trick or Treat Pop-Up

Spooky Books for Kids

There are some kids (like my daughter) that love suspenseful, slightly spooky, Halloween books. It always cracked me up how much she enjoyed those spooky books. You could tell she was getting a little spooked. She would lean forward in her seat, look at me, giggle, and then put her hands in front of her mouth. They were never too spooky, of course, but just enough suspense to keep her on the edge of her seat! Some spooky books to check out are:

  • Where’s My Mummy?
  • Annie was Warned
  • Hardly Haunted
  • Halloween Night

What Books Would You Add?

This is a pretty good list of Halloween books. Are there any that you would add to the list? Please let me know so I can add them! I think books are so important for kids to have in the home and available to them. Get your kids interested in books while they are young and you will have a reader for life! I still have fond memories of my mom taking me to the library and me checking out 15 books at a time. Not even joking!

August 24, 2021 by Leah Leave a Comment

I am a huge Colleen Hoover fan. Anytime I see a book of hers available on Hoopla, Libby, or Kindle Unlimited, I jump to download it. About the Book Never Never

From Amazon –

Together, they have created a gripping, romantic tale unlike any other. “How odd to be made of flesh, balanced on bone, and filled with a soul you’ve never met.”

Charlize Wynwood and Silas Nash have been best friends since they could walk. They’ve been in love since the age of fourteen. But as of this morning…they are complete strangers. Their first kiss, their first fight, the moment they fell in love…every memory has vanished. “I don’t care what our real first kiss was,” he says. “That’s the one I want to remember.”

Charlize and Silas must work together to uncover the truth about what happened to them and why. But the more they learn about the couple they used to be…the more they question why they were ever together to begin with.

“I want to remember what it feels like to love someone like that. And not just anyone. I want to know what it feels like to love Charlie.”

My Thoughts on This Book

Well, if you couldn’t tell from the opening paragraph, I am completely a fan of this book. Not only is Never Never a great mystery/suspense novel, but it is also a great romance story. This Young Adult novel was interesting from the very start. Imagine walking into class one day and not knowing anyone around you. If that isn’t strange enough, imagine not having any memories. Even your own name! Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher do a fantastic job getting you to feel something for characters Silas and Charlie. One of my favorite things is how this book is written with alternating points of view from Silas and Charlie’s perspectives.

What Should I Read Next?

Please, please, please leave me a comment and tell me what I should read next! I will be having knee surgery soon and I will be laid up for MONTHS! While I will be watching a heck of a lot of Netflix, I will also be reading. I need to build that “must read list” now!
