The Best Early Chapter Books for Boys

October 19, 2017 by Leah 18 Comments

Reading didn’t always come easy for my son. He struggled for several years during elementary school. As a parent, it is really hard to watch your child struggle with any aspect of reading. They so desperately want to read what their friends are, but have a hard time getting through the book. Besides always encouraging them to read and reading with them, it’s also good to make sure that you have books available to they want to read and interests them. Below are some of the best early chapter books that my son (and daughter) really liked!

When my son was little, I remember it seeming like it was really hard to find books that were geared towards little boys. Everything seemed really girly. However, after many trips to the library and scanning Amazon, we were able to find a bunch of books that my son liked.

Early Chapter Books for Boys

The first early chapter books I remember my son liking, was the Geronimo Stilton series. This series is about a newspaper editor that is spooked by the littlest things. Each book is about him being brought into one crazy adventure after another. With full color pictures and text, this book series is one your son will love to read!

Like Geronimo Stilton, this next series by Jeff Brown is also about a boy and his various adventures. Flat Stanley takes you with him on his adventures while he fits under doors, slides down drainage grates, etc. Your son will be entertained from start to finish!

What little boy doesn’t love aliens? The Alien in my Pocket series is a cute series that are quick reads and enjoyable. Two kids and a little blue alien set out on an adventure to save the world from an invasion. This book is filled with illustrations to peak your child’s imagination and keep them coming back for more!

The Fly Guy series has always been a favorite in this house. With 20 books currently in the series, Tedd Arnold has captured kids interest with a fly! Book one starts out with Buzz capturing a fly for the pet talent show. Everyone tells Buzz that a fly can’t be a pet. Buzz and Fly Guy prove them wrong, all while entertaining kids and giving them the confidence the need to read early chapter books!

What kid doesn’t dream about being a millionaire when they get older? With this next book series, Benji Franklin, Kid Zillionaire kids are introduced to the concept of being an entrepreneur, making money and using the money for good…not selfish means. I think, in this day and age, that is such an excellent message for our kids!

When I was growing up, I had teachers that put down kids for reading comic books. It’s always been my philosophy that I want my kids to be reading. I didn’t care what it was that they read (so long as it was appropriate). My son enjoys graphic novels. So long as the book is appropriate for his age and ability, I encourage graphic novels. These are a few of his favorites:

Be sure to check out these great early chapter books for boys (and girls…my daughter liked them too). I always like to make sure my kids get books as part of any gift I give them. These would be perfect for the holidays. Pick them up, put them away and watch your child’s love for reading grow and grow! Check out my list of books for tween girls.

What early chapter books would you add to the list?

September 18, 2017 by Leah 18 Comments

Books are a huge part of our lives in our house. Growing up, I loved to read. Going to the library was one of my favorite things. Even to this day, as an adult, I love going to the library. There’s something about being surrounded by books. When she was younger, my daughter would only check out or ask us to buy her non-fiction books because she felt that if she was going to read, she needed to be learning something. Over the course of the summer, she started branching out and has found quite a few fiction books that she really enjoys! Here are her top 10 books for tween girls!

August 29, 2017 by Leah 9 Comments

Do you ever sit there wondering what in the world to get certain people in your life? They seem to have everything or they are the type of person to pick up whatever they want, whenever they want. It’s beyond frustrating. Until you sit down and really think about the person and their interests. For instance…they like to read. Sure you could get them a gift card to their favorite book store, but think outside the box a bit. That’s what makes this list of book lover gifts so perfect!

Book Lover Gifts

One of the best gifts, something I use EVERY SINGLE DAY (not even joking) that I ever got was my Kindle Paperwhite. Since I spend a lot of time in my car, waiting on my kids while they are at their sports practices, I make sure I always have my Kindle Paperwhite with me and loaded with books. Since it holds over a thousand books at once, I am never left without something to read (especially the newest Alex Cross book).

If you are going with a Kindle or they already have a Kindle, then the next idea on the quest for book lover gifts is Kindle Unlimited. If you aren’t familiar with it, Kindle Unlimited allows you to borrow books from Amazon for a small monthly fee. Want to check it out first? Sign up for the FREE 30 day trial!

Do they prefer to hold actual books? I know many people think I’m crazy for not wanting to actually hold a book in my hands. Or smell that book smell. You know what smell I’m talking about. When I was a kid, I used to love going to the library to smell the books. If that’s the case, then these book smell candles are perfect for them!

For those that like to borrow books from their local library or read outside at the park, then you have to get them one of these adorable bags for carrying their books!

OK…so I admit, I am partial to the “I Like Big Books and I Cannot Lie” bag…I may have to order that one! Pick your favorite bag, add your favorite book, a few snacks, etc and you have a super cute gift!

Book Lover Gifts for Aspiring Authors

This last set of gift ideas are my personal favorite. They are perfect for that aspiring author or book lover that loves to keep a journal. These unique journals have an entire book written within the journal…as the lines you write on! I have been eyeing one of these journals for a couple years!

Pick up one of these journals, a cute bag from above, a fancy pen or those Paper Mate Inkjoy Gel Pens that don’t smear and are so nice to write with (and this is an amazing price for them), add a couple snacks and you have a truly unique book lover gift to give a friend of family member!

If you have other ideas, let me know! I am always looking for unique gift ideas!

Kindle E-Reader – Perfect for Back to School

August 22, 2017 by Leah Leave a Comment

Kids are starting to go back to school (mine don’t go back until the day after Labor Day) and parents are scrambling around to get the best deals on markers, notebooks, and other back to school supplies. One thing that you may not realize your kid needs, but could prove to be a good thing to have, is a Kindle e-reader. Not only could it be great to have for the classroom, but it is also great for trips, reading at night, etc.

*As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases*

kindle e-reader

Now, before you look at me like I have two heads and tell me I’m crazy for suggesting this, hear me out. When my son went to middle school, it was a requirement that they always had a silent reading book with them. They had mandatory silent reading time in homeroom, as well as plenty of other times throughout the day as they finished class work. If they ever forgot to bring a silent reading book to class, they would get in trouble. Kids shouldn’t have to take more than one book with them just because they are close to finishing one of them. Because, who needs that extra added weight?!?

About the Kindle E-Reader

If you aren’t familiar with a Kindle, you need to be! I got one almost two years ago and it is my absolute favorite gift I’ve ever gotten. There are four different Kindle e-reader options:

  • Kindle
  • Kindle Paperwhite
  • Kindle Voyage
  • Kindle Oasis

Kindle E-reader - Black, 6Kindle E-reader – Black, 6Kindle Paperwhite E-reader - Black, 6Kindle Paperwhite E-reader – Black, 6Kindle Voyage E-reader, 6Kindle Voyage E-reader, 6Kindle Oasis E-reader with Leather Charging Cover - Black, 6Kindle Oasis E-reader with Leather Charging Cover – Black, 6

The Kindle is your basic e-reader device. It is lightweight, as are the other three, but it has a lower resolution and it is not backlit so you cannot read in the dark with it, unless you have a light of some sort (like possibly this light). Each of the other three types of Kindles offer a higher resolution, a built in-light, plus other features. I have the Kindle Paperwhite and personally prefer that one over the others. The price point is perfect and it does what I need it to do.

Why Is It Good For School?

You may still be asking yourself, “why does my child need a Kindle e-reader for school?”. The answer is, he or she doesn’t need it, but it may come in handy for a number of reasons. Nowadays, kids are carrying so much stuff to school. An added book or two for silent reading could potentially make things a lot heavier or awkward to carry. With a Kindle, they can have literally thousands of books on there; it stays charged for weeks at a time; it is lightweight; and it doesn’t take up much room.

Doesn’t that sound like a good idea? Plus, they can borrow books from your local public library or sign up for Kindle Unlimited. With Kindle Unlimited, you have thousands upon thousands of books at your fingertips, all for a small monthly fee. I personally love having Kindle Unlimited! Sign up for a free 30 day trial to see how you like it!

Be sure to check out the different Kindle e-reader options and pick one up today while they are on sale! Happy back to school shopping!
