The Ultimate Summer Reading Bucket List

April 26, 2018 by Leah 5 Comments

Can you believe that the school year is almost over? Where has this year gone? It’s insane. In a few short months I will have a high schooler (say what?!?) and a middle schooler. I really can’t believe it. This year, my daughter really got into reading. She is currently reading the Harry Potter series and loving it. I want to continue to foster that love for reading so I put together this Ultimate Summer Reading Bucket list. After printing one out for each kid, they can hang it in their room and start checking off the different bucket list items! There’s something for everyone on this list!

One of the things you can do to help foster that love for reading, is to take weekly trips to the library. Not only do you knock an item off the summer reading bucket list, but you also give your child (and yourself) the opportunity to check out a TON of different types of books at once! Definitely utilize the librarian. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve gone up to our librarian, told them an example of a book the kids like and they then give us a bunch more that are similar.

E-Book Reading

If your kids are like my daughter and prefer to read on a Kindlesummer reading bucket list, then definitely check with your local librarian as to which online service they use to borrow books. My local library uses Overdrive and Hoopla (though, I do believe that Hoopla will only work with a table, not a Kindle since you have to use the Hoopla app). Another great thing with the Kindle is the Kindle Unlimited Membership Planssummer reading bucket list. Kindle Unlimited is great! You can borrow up to 10 books at one time. Not sure if you will like it or use it? Click on the link and start your FREE 30 day trial. The Kindle Unlimited membership can be used to read books on a Kindle, on your desktop/laptop computer or on a tablet with the Kindle app.

Whatever you do this summer, READ! Schedule electronic blackout times where you and the kids spend the time reading a book or use this summer daily planner printable and put reading on their daily to do list! Have a conversation about the books you are reading while you eat dinner. Kids like to talk about the books they are reading. As I mentioned, my daughter is reading the Harry Potter series. She’s so excited about this series, that she read two books in two weeks. She likes to talk to us about the differences between the book and the movie. And boy does she get upset when they make “stupid changes” in the movie!

Horror Books for Kids – Night of the Living Dummy

April 2, 2018 by Leah 6 Comments

Getting the kids to read can sometimes be a difficult task. I am lucky that my love for reading has been passed on to my kids. They have always seen me reading, so that could also be why they like reading so much too. Currently I am doing a MasterClass that is being put on by R.L. Stine and not only did it bring me back to my childhood days when I was constantly checkout Fear Street books out of the library, but his take on writing horror books for kids is really interesting. R.L. Stine makes it a point to always make sure that kids (typically 7-12 years old for his Goosebumps series) know he is writing a fantasy and he doesn’t use real life violence or guns in his stories. I decided to read the Goosebumps book, Night of the Living Dummy to share with you all.

As I mentioned above, I grew up reading the Fear Street books. I absolutely loved them. According to R.L. Stine, his Fear street horror books are for kids over 12 years old and to about 15 or 16 years old. His Goosebumps books are typically for kids between the ages of 7 and 12 years old. Since I am an aspiring author and would like to ultimately write books for kids or young adults, I decided to read the Goosebumps, Night of the Living Dummy book. Not to mention, I love reading horror books as an adult, I’d love to pass that one with some good horror books for kids suggestions!

About Night of the Living Dummy

The book starts out extremely relatable for kid (and parents) with two competitive twin sisters, Lindy and Kris. After exploring the house being build next door, Lindy finds a ventriloquist dummy that she decides to name Slappy. Kris, unable to let her sister be better at something than her, begs her parents to buy her a ventriloquist dummy of her own. After finding Mr. Wood in a pawn shop, Kris begins to realize, having another dummy in the house, isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Scary things start happening and it appears that Mr. Wood is really alive and mean. Pulling pranks on the family and getting Kris and Lindy in trouble.

R.L. Stine uses just the right amount of horror in this book to keep kids turning the pages. I could see my daughter reading this book and asking me for just “one more minute”. Each chapter ends with a cliffhanger, which is perfect for kids. You want them to want to turn the page to find out what’s going to happen. The nice thing about the Goosebumps series is that there are a lot of books in the series for the kids to choose from and keep them reading for quite awhile. These horror books for kids are an easy read and perfect for kids that are 7 years and up!

Pick up a few of these horror books for kids to read over the summer! They will enjoy them and you will enjoy that your kids are reading! Find out more information about the R.L. Stine MasterClass by visiting the MasterClass website!

Judy Blume MasterClass on Writing

March 22, 2018 by Leah 7 Comments

When I think back to the different authors that I read when I was a child, the first one that comes to mind is Judy Blume. When I read the book, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, I remember being totally taken by the book. The way Judy Blume captures what it was like to be a tween girl (though, I don’t know that they were called tweens then), was amazing. As soon as I finished that book, I read many more that she had written. It was at that time that I decided that one day I wanted to be a writer. When I found out that there was going to be a Judy Blume MasterClass, I knew I had to sign up. I had to learn from someone that I considered the best.

My birthday was a month ago and one thing my husband knows I like are the MasterClasses. A year or so ago, I took the James Patterson MasterClass and loved it. I highly recommend that one, especially if you like James Patterson books! So, as you can imagine, when I found out that I got the all access MasterClass, I was beside myself excited! I immediately logged in and began the Judy Blume MasterClass on writing.

Judy Blume MasterClass on Writing

I had to fight the urge to not sit and watch all of the lessons in one sitting. The amount of information that Judy Blume provided was tremendous. Not only did she talk about how she got started, she spoke passionately about how she overcame rejection and the stinging reality that some people (typically men) were trying to censor her books. Her book, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret was banned in library’s and schools because the main character has the audacity to talk about her period. Apparently that was offensive. Yes…go ahead…roll your eyes. This may knock some down, but not Judy. Judy Blume serves on the board of the National Coalition Against Censorship. In 2009, she was honored by this organization for all her hard work and dedication in the fight against censorship.

Have I Started Writing Yet?

Since finishing the Judy Blume MasterClass, I have put a few of her practices in place. I have my trusty idea box where I can keep various ideas for potential books. Another idea that she gave me was to listen. Listen to the conversations around me. Eavesdropping is good! You never know when I tiny snippet of a conversation will spark an idea in your head. But, above all, she taught me to just write. Don’t be afraid of what others may say. If you have a story to write, then write it. Get it out.

While I may be done with the Judy Blume MasterClass, I do have the all access pass (meaning I can take all of the classes for a year) and I am currently going through the Shonda Rhimes MasterClass. I don’t know that I necessarily have what it takes to write a television show, but it is extremely interesting to see her process. If you are interested in writing or have other interests and wonder if there is a MasterClass for that (there probably is!!), then you really need to check out the MasterClass site and get yourself signed up!! It’s never too late to go after your passion!

Psychological Thriller – Hello Again by Brenda Novak

February 27, 2018 by Leah 12 Comments

Psychological thrillers are my favorite books to read. My husband always shakes his head when he sees what I’m reading. I just find them super interesting. They are filled with mystery, drama and usually, serial killers! However, Brenda Novak’s latest book, part of the Dr. Evelyn Talbot series, Hello Again is a must read! You will NOT be able to put this book down! I had many late nights reading this book! Be sure to keep on reading to the end for a chance to win a signed copy of this book!

Like I mentioned above, Hello Again by Brenda Novak is part of the Dr. Evelyn Talbot series. The other books in this series are:

Why Psychological Thrillers?

Why not? With this particular series, Dr. Evelyn Talbot experienced an absolutely horrific experience at the hands of her high school boyfriend. Rather than shut down and withdraw from the world, Evelyn Talbot fought back. She opened a prison in Alaska that houses the worst kind of criminal. The psychopaths. Her main objective with this prison is to study these men and draw conclusions about why they do what they do. She does this, all while, never giving up hope that the psychopath that tormented her so many years ago, will be caught.

Harlan Coben Suspense Novel – Caught

February 14, 2018 by Leah 17 Comments

One of my favorite authors, that is relatively new to me, is Harlan Coben. His novels draw you in and you literally don’t want to put it down. This latest novel I read by him called Caught, was one that kept me up late into the night! While I love reading late at night (it’s just so quiet), it’s not so great when I realize it’s 3 a.m. and my alarm is going off at 6 a.m.! As a reader, I’m sure you’ve been there. You get to that point in a book where you literally can’t stop reading!

Caught By Harlan Coben

I love books that are suspenseful. If it has me on the edge of my seat and possibly even scares me a bit, I’m happy. That’s my kind of book. Caught by Harlan Coben fit that category completely.

17 year-old Haley McWaid is a good girl, the pride of her suburban New Jersey family, captain of the lacrosse team, headed off to college next year with all the hopes and dreams her doting parents can pin on her. Which is why, when her mother wakes one morning to find that Haley never came home the night before, and three months quickly pass without word from the girl, the community assumes the worst.

Wendy Tynes is a reporter on a mission, to identify and bring down sexual predators via elaborate—and nationally televised—sting operations. Working with local police on her news program Caught in the Act, Wendy and her team have publicly shamed dozens of men by the time she encounters her latest target. Dan Mercer is a social worker known as a friend to troubled teens, but his story soon becomes more complicated than Wendy could have imagined.

CaughtCaught

With a teenager of my own (and another soon to be teenager), this book scared me in a completely different way than most I read. Having your teen go missing is any parents worst nightmare. Harlan Coben did a phenomenal job breaking down exactly how a parent would feel if this were to happen to them. The addition of the sexual predator storyline was also key. Especially in this day and age. So both aspects of the book worked for me and definitely drew me in.

The ending though…my gosh…I did NOT see that coming. I actually thought I had the book figured out. Nope! Harlan Coben totally took the book in another direction that I totally did not see coming. BUT…it totally worked. As I thought about the book afterwards, while I didn’t think about that possible ending, I realized that it was excellent for this storyline and something that would totally happen. Maybe not 100% the way it all played out, but pieces of it were spot on.

Other Books by Harlan Coben

As I mentioned before, this is a newer author to me. Another book I read by him that I really enjoyed is Home. I highly recommend you pick up a copy of that book. It was very good! Two others by Harlan Coben that I recommend are Hold Tight and The Stranger.

What is your favorite Harlan Coben book that you think I should read?
